This is a brief overview of an organization we've evaluated which is working to improve education for students in India.
Educate Girls runs the Gyan Ka Pitara (GKP) program, a comprehensive remedial education initiative that targets students in India who face the largest learning gaps.
They pair this program with their work enrolling out-of-school girls in primary school, helping them catch up to grade level and continue their education.
What problem are they trying to solve?
On average, a girl in India receives less than four years of education in her lifetime—a number that’s even lower in rural and underserved districts. Gender disparities in educational access and outcomes create a cycle of educational disadvantage that can persist across generations. In India’s most educationally disadvantaged districts, both male and female students often fall behind grade level and struggle to catch up, leading to high dropout rates, which has a severe impact on future income and well-being.
What do they do?
The GKP program delivers structured curriculum in Hindi, English, and mathematics through a carefully designed system that includes detailed teacher training, specific lesson plans, and targeted learning tools. They break down literacy and numeracy into specific micro-skills, allowing for precise tracking of student progress and mastery. Teachers can then group students by ability level for targeted instruction, ensuring each child receives support at their current level of understanding.
The program is strengthened by regular classroom observations and teacher feedback, creating a continuous improvement cycle. This attention to implementation quality has helped GKP achieve and maintain exceptional results even as they scale. Importantly, they integrate this remedial education work with their successful out-of-school girls enrollment program, achieving a remarkable 91% retention rate for enrolled girls.
Why do we recommend them?
GKP stands out for their exceptional impact on learning outcomes. Their recent large-scale randomized controlled trial demonstrated learning gains of over one standard deviation—the largest improvement we’ve seen among large-scale education interventions. This remarkable achievement stems from their focus on the most underperforming schools and lagging students, where the potential for improvement is highest. Educate Girls consistently demonstrates program improvements through multiple evaluations, and their metrics are regularly validated by independent evaluators, ensuring the reliability of their reported impacts.
What would they do with more funding?
Additional funding would enable Educate Girls to continue refining the effectiveness of GKP through regular classroom observations and feedback for teachers. By leveraging their existing operations and focusing on the most underserved areas, Educate Girls can expand their reach at a relatively modest marginal cost. Your support can help provide structured remedial education to thousands of students who might otherwise fall through the cracks.
